Protecting Our Children
May 17, 2017
Identity theft threatens our future on every level. Unfortunately, children have also fallen victim to identity theft vultures who prey on the innocent, seeking to win financial gain from those who are most vulnerable. While we may not realize that our children are just as much targets as we are, credit agencies and legislators do realize this and have taken necessary steps to protect our most prized possessions: Our children.
Did you know that 27 states, including Florida (thank goodness), have enacted legislation that will allow parents, legal guardians or other representatives of minors to place a security freeze on the credit files of children? That's right! Doing so protects our children and puts them at an advantage in the best way possible. A few steps that parents and guardians can take to further protect the futures of their children are:
1. Monitor your child's use on social media - make sure they aren't sharing out personal information
2. Refuse to use social security numbers on school documents - simply put, that is what a student Id number is for
3. Pull your child's credit report before he is 16- don't just get your child a check-up at the doctor's office, do a credit check-up periodically as well!
